$1 to Full Belly Project

Universal Nut Sheller
19/365

I recently found out about the Full Belly Project in a book and really found the niche organization interesting.

Why Full Belly Project?
  • Mission: design and distribute income-generating agricultural devices to improve life in rural communities.
  • Notable projects:
    • The Universal Nut Sheller (UNS):  hand-powered device made of concrete and simple metal parts that can shell 125 pounds of peanuts (or other crops) per hour. Costs $50-75 to make in a developing country, depending on the price of local materials, and can serve the needs of a village of 5,000 people.
Pedal-Powered Agricultural Center (PPAC):  A pedal-powered device that is connected to the Universal Nut Sheller, thus increasing the machine’s output.  Also separates the nuts from the shells, saving labor.
Electric Powered Agricultural Center (EPAC):  Useful for operations in need of shelling large amounts of nuts on a daily basis. The first has been used by Meds and Food for Kids in Haiti. Meds and Food makes a peanut butter based Ready To Use Therapeutic Food called Medika Mamba to treat children with severe malnutrition. The EPAC has enabled them to quadruple their capacity.
